The most awkward call I ever made came out of the blue. It was a boring Tuesday, as Tuesdays tend to be, and I was alone in the shop. What is a pin and tumbler lock and how do I pick it?

Common pin and tumbler locks contain a cylinder that rotates within its housing. When the door is locked, the cylinder is unable to rotate as it is held in place by several pairs of pins (there are usually six pairs, consisting of a top and bottom pin.)

Before you attempt to pick the lock, it’s important to understand the basic principles of how the lock works.Locksmith Boca Raton specialists are happy to tell you.

The top pin of each pair extends into both the cylinder and the housing, preventing it from moving and keeping the door locked. When the correct key is inserted, it pushes the pins upwards, so that the top pin is no longer in the cylinder, allowing the lock to turn and the door to open. Springs provide resistance to hold the top pins in place.

First- You need to determine which way the lock will turn. To do this you need to place a tension wrench into the lower portion of the keyhole and try to turn it. You can determine which is the "right" as there should be a little give.

Second- Feel for the pins by using a gentle twisting motion. Once you find the pin, press on it with a downward pressure to overcome to spring. Push on the upper pin until it is out of the cylinder. Repeat the steps for all the pins while making sure the tension wrench does not move. You want to be careful of this as you do not want to upper pins to fall back in place.
